About Quarry Creek

Quarry Creek Farms, owned by Kathy Anderson, Jim Kannenberg and Steve Daugherty was established in 1989. We have been raising elk since 1992 and buffalo (bison) since 1998.
We still have out very first elk. Her name is Molly and she was purchased from Rush and Inez Johnson of Bucklen, Missouri. Rush is credited with beginning the elk industry in North America. We fell in love with the elk business when we first laid eyes on Molly. She was only fourteen days old and was being bottle-fed by Rush and Inez. Jim and Kathy continued to bottle feed and raise Molly in their back yard until she was old enough to be moved out to the farm. Thus, it all began because everyone needs a playmate and a friend – even elk.
Currently 200+ elk reside at Quarry Creek Farms. They are raised primarily for breeding stock, velvet and meat. To further diversify, buffalo were added to Quarry Creek in 1998. Currently we have about 80 head of buffalo.
All of our animals are pasture raised and supplemented with small amounts of grain. Our animals are not fed questionable drugs, chemicals or hormones. Because the animals are farm raised with a controlled diet, their meat does not have a “gamy” taste that many people expect. In fact, elk and buffalo meat is extremely flavorful with a sweeter and richer flavor than beef. Both elk and buffalo are considered gourmet meats due to their wonderful flavor. Restaurants that have been able to establish a stable supply of these meats often feature them as their house specialties. There are, however, benefits beyond their wonderful taste. Both meats are extremely high in protein and nutrients and very low in fat, calories and cholesterol. They are ideal for people who are watching their weight or have been told to watch their fat intake.
